Syllabus
What is Science?
We will start off the year by discussing what science is, how scientists think, and how science can be used to innovate and improve our society. We will examine the moral, ethical, economical, political and environmental impacts that science plays in our everyday lives.
From Molecules to Organisms
Everything we see in the world around us can be broken down to the same fundamental building blocks. Starting small, we will look at how cells function and work together to influence the growth and behavior of animals and plants.
Ecology
How do our actions influence the environment around us? We will look at how relationships in different ecological communities and how they maintain their balance.
Evolution
We will look at how certain variations traits affect an organism's probability of surviving and reproducing and how these traits have changed over time.
Sex Ed
What does healthy decision-making look like? We will learn about various types of contraception as well as abstinence to prevent unplanned pregnancies and the transmission of STIs including HIV.
Genetics
How do I look different from my sibling if we both share half our DNA from Mom and half from Dad? We will compare the advantages and disadvantages of asexual vs. sexual reproduction and examine how traits are passed from one generation to the next.
